Double D Puppies - Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions

We get lots of questions from new families and hope to be able to answer some of them here!

Attention:

If you are in the Colorado area, and expecially front range area - please beaware of the coyote problem!!

Coyotes are coming into backyards, into houses (yes, I have talked to a family that had this happen!), thru doggie doors and stalking your puppy and dog out on walking paths and in the park!

Coyotes are trying and succeeding to grab your little one (mainly small breeds, i.e.: Yorkies, Maltese, Toy breeds, ect) and taking off with it. These coyotes are looking for food, and are going after your animals to eat! Unfortunatully it sounds really bad, but it is true!

They are also jumping fences and pulling dogs thru fences to get them.

Please watch your animals very closely as they have had lots of problems all across the front range!

DOG/PUPPY SCAMMERS

Also there are SCAMMERS out there trying to get you to send them money for a puppy. They will state that the puppy is overseas and you just need to pay for the shipping. YOU WILL NEVER SEE A PUPPY OR YOUR MONEY AGAIN!!!

We have spoke to several people who have had this happen to them! Unbelievable, but yes, its true!

Now they are starting to EMAIL you, without any interest on your part to begin with. They are getting more literate with each email and are trying very hard to look ligitimate. They are not! No actually breeder would contact you without you first contacting them!

These are SCAMMERS as well!! Below are two different ones that I have recieved lately. PLEASE...DO NOT RESPOND TO THEM OR GIVE THEM YOUR INFORMATION OR YOUR MONEY!!! You will never get it back!

Bulldogs and Yorkies are very popular right now (and expensive), and they seem to be the breeds that they are targeting, although I have seen others with different breeds. This also goes for adult dogs too. Please be very careful when dealing with someone who has sought you out!

Please take time to read our FAQ’s.  Your question may be answered here!

What is APRI & ACA

APRI stands for Americas Pet Registry Inc.  They have been a registration service for over 10 years.  All puppies registered with APRI have to be purebred.  You can visit their site at www.aprpet.org  APRI also has a Hybrid Registry for Designer Dogs as well (a dog that is a cross between two different breeds).

ACA stands for American Canine Association and was founded by Veterinarians.  Puppies also must be purebred and will be registered as such, unless they are a Designer Dog, and they will be registered with their Hybrid Registry.

Will my puppy be Microchipped?

NO.  We feel that this is your choice.  We do not feel that it is our decision to make for your dog.  Most Veterinarian offices, and several large pet stores offer Microchipping for a fee.  Please look into this very carefully.  There are many pros and cons for Microchipping.

What paperwork will my puppy come with?

Your puppy will come with 3 different types of paperwork.

1st will be your registration papers.  These are the papers that say your puppy is a purebred or Hybrid.  You fill out the information such as “puppy’s name, color and your information” and send it in with the application fee to the address provided.

2nd will be your Health Contract and  Sale Guarantee.  This has all of our information, your information and your puppy’s information on it.  It also has a copy of your puppy’s medical record and our Health Guarantee.

3rd will be a second copy of your puppies Medical Record.  This is everything he has been given up to the time you get him.  You will need to take this copy to your Veterinarian, so she can see everything he has been given and will guide you as to where to go from there.

Should I spay or neuter my puppy and if so, when?

We strongly suggest that you spay or neuter your new puppy.  The best times to have this done for females is before they have their 1st heat cycle (approx. between the ages of 6 months and 11 months).

Your male should be neutered around 6 months of age.

What benefits are there with spaying or neutering?

Neutering your male:

1.  You'll reduce prostate cancer and testicular cancer

  1. Your male should now make a really good house pet, as he won’t be chasing after all the pretty ladies on the block!
  2.  He will be more likely to listen to you when you speak to him.
  3. In many cases he won’t be “marking” all over your house or in the neighborhood.

Spaying your female:

  1. It is scientifically proven that your can reduce the incidence of breast cancer in your female by almost 90% when they are older if you have them spayed BEFORE their first heat cycle.
  2. Your little girl will not be able to breed, thus you will not have to worry about what sneaky neighbors dog that has been around.
  3. If you have her spayed before her first heat cycle, you also won’t have to deal with her bleeding on your couch, carpets, ect.

What happens in surgery when my pet is neutered or spayed?

Spaying and neutering are very simple procedures.

Your vet will give your puppy a quick exam to make sure your puppy is healthy enough for surgery.

He will then weight her and give her a sedative and anesthesia.

The procedure take about 10 to 15 minutes, and the animal can normally go home that day.

Veterinarians do price their spaying and neutering prices different, so make sure and check what it will cost.  There are also lots of organizations as well as city programs that offer free or reduced prices to have your puppy spayed or neutered.

What happens if I want to put down a deposit?

We accept deposits for all our puppies.  Putting down a deposit will guarantee you a puppy from one you have already picked out or for our next litter.

If you have found a puppy on our site that you would like, we require a deposit of HALF the purchase price to hold her for you.  We will NOT hold any puppy without a deposit.  Please do not ask.

We accept VISA, MasterCard, or Paypal for your deposit.

If we do not have the puppy available that you are looking for, we do take deposits on our upcoming litters.  (We do this quite frequently anymore!).  We normally have a pretty good idea when our next litter will be here.

If you have put down a deposit for a puppy and will not be able to get her when she is ready to go, we can apply your deposit to a future litter.  We do not refund any deposits.

Once you put down a deposit, you will receive our Deposit and Hold Agreement in the mail.

Who are your registered with?

We are required to be registered with the State of Colorado Animal Division, as we have 3 or more breeding females.

We have always been in complete compliance with the State of Colorado, actually going over and beyond their requirements.

The state of Colorado does surprise inspections about every 6 to 12 months (more for kennels that have problems).  Surprise inspections are just that ~ surprises ~ !.  They can show up any day at about any time.  They do a complete walk thru to check our kennels and dogs.  They will often check all our paperwork as well as make sure our meds are current on dates, and go over any new rules that apply to us.

Do you show your dogs?

No we don’t show our dogs.  If you would like to show your puppy, there are a lot of great training classes and show classes you can enroll in.

When can I get my puppy?

As per rules of the State of Colorado, your new puppy can go home with you once they turn 8 weeks old.  Please don’t ask to take him home a few days sooner, as it is more convient for you.  This is a law, and we will not break it and risk losing our license. Some puppies due to their small size may not be ready to go home until 10 to 12 weeks. All puppies must be eating hard food on their own and be competely weaned from mom to go home.

Will it have all its shots?

Your puppy will have a Kennel Cough vaccine, a DPv Vaccine (strictly for Parvo and the Wildlife Distemper strains) and at least one Galaxy 5 vaccine.  She will also be wormed 3 times with two different wormers.  If you get your puppy and he is a bit older, he will have had vaccines and dewormings as per his age.

Where are you located?  How do I get to you?

We are located in wonderful Eastern Colorado.  Depending on where you are coming from is where we meet you.  If you are coming from the Colorado Springs area or anywhere from the south, we will meet you in Kit Carson. We are approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes east of Colorado Springs.

Kit Carson is located on Hwys 59 and 287.

If you are coming from Denver, anywhere north or most of Kansas, we meet you in Seibert on I-70.  We are approximately 2 hours from the East end of Denver.

Periodically we do come to Denver or Colorado Springs.  If we are coming up when your puppy will be ready, we will be happy to meet you.  We normally do this only if we have 5 or more puppies that are ready to go, or I really need to go shopping!!  We try to post on our home page when we will be in the city.

What kind of food has my puppy been eating?

We feed Purina Puppy Food. You can find it just about everywhere. Its in the blue bag. Our puppies have really thrived on it, and we feed Purina Dog Chow to all our adults.

What is a Designer Dog?

A Designer Dog is a cross breed of two purebred dogs of different breeds.  An example is a Puggle, which is a cross of a Pug and Beagle.  Most of the time they are given new “breed names”, for which to distinguish them by.

You will hear about Chiweenies (Dachshund x Chihuahua), Morkies (Maltese x Yorkie); Chorkies (Chihuahua x Yorkie) ect.
Then there are also the Poos.  A “Poo” puppy is any breed crossed with a Poodle.
This includes, but not limited to Multi-Poos (Maltese x Poodle), Shih-Poos (Shih-Tzu’s x Poodle), Yorki-Poos (Yorkie x Poodle) ect.

These can be large like a Labordoodle which is a cross of a Lab and a Standard Poodle.
Normally if a breed is crossed with a Standard Poodle it is labeled a “doodle”.  If it is crossed with a Mini or Toy Poodle normally it is a “Poo”. They can also be called a Mini Laboradoodle as well.

Can I give my new puppy a different name than what you have called it?

YES!  You can name your new puppy what ever you want to.  (Although some people have kept the name I gave the puppy!)  If you have put a deposit on a puppy and already know its name, please let us know and we will change it on our website and start to call him his name!

Do I have to register my puppy with my registration papers?

No.  Registration papers are to show he is a purebred or hybrid.  It does cost to register your puppy.  Check your registration papers to see what to do and how much you need to send them.

It is your choice if you wish to register her.  If you do, you will receive a paper back from the registration service with your dogs name on it and your information printed on it as well.

Will I have to take my puppy to the groomer – can I groom him myself?

This is really an individual question.  A lot depends on the breed that you choose.

You can very easily learn to groom your own puppy or dog.  Some breeds need monthly or bi-weekly groomings to keep looking good, others you just may need to take a brush to.

Breeds (that we have) that tend to need grooming on a monthly/bi-monthly basis are:
Yorkies, Poodles, Shih-Tzus, and many of the Designer dogs.

Most of the rest need a quick brushing out ever few months, (more in the spring and fall- as they are shedding their coats).

Our Berners, Shibas, Shelties and Aussies all normally “blow” their coats.  If you have a breed of one of these, you may be grooming daily for a week or two, depending on the dog.

The best way to do this is to take your dog out to the garage or back yard and start to brush or simply “pulling” (not hard) the hair that is sticking up that has already loosened from the skin.  It normally has a duller appearance and will come out in clumps.
All dogs and puppies need to have their toenails clipped and teeth checked/cleaned.  You can also do these at home.

Groomers are also worth their weight in gold!  If you don’t have the time or your dog has a really overgrown coat, they can do wonders!!

What is the best way to potty train my puppy?

We strongly suggest crate traning.

Can I take my new puppy to the park and pet store as soon as I bring him home?

NO, and that is again a NO! Your puppy is still in need of his or her other vaccinations up until they are 16 weeks old. Vaccine manufactures don't consider your puppy vaccinated until they have had at least 4 puppy vaccines (like the Galaxy 5, Proguard 5 ect.)

You puppy is very suspectable to parasites and virus and these can all be very easily picked up and into your puppys system, just by being in these places. Parasites and virsus are know to be airborn as well as picked up thru fecal and urine, or even drinking water that has been contaminated.

DO NOT take your puppy to any of these types of places until at least 2 weeks AFTER they have had all their vaccinations. Unfortunatully it may be disappointing to not get to take Fluffy to the park with your friends dog right away, but you may be saving yourself a lot of expense later!
